Communication That Connects: Our Preaching, Bible Version, Confession, Branding, and Songs
In the previous installments of this series, I’ve addressed the importance, definition, and biblical support for accommodating our gospel communication to make it intelligible to the people we’re trying to reach.1 Below I’d like to highlight five different areas in which we should seek to apply this principle of accommodation to the way we communicate biblical truth in church ministry. The Bible and Homosexuality
On August 26, 2012, my Senior Pastor, Bob Selph, preached to our congregation a message entitled “The Bible and Homosexuality.” The topic was especially relevant. President Obama had publicly affirmed his support for same-sex marriage in May. Not long after that, Dan Cathy, the president of the popular fast-food restaurant “Chick-fil-A” and a Bible-believing Christian, expressed his support for traditional marriage. Read more

Christ as the Pastor’s Center – Tom Ascol
Every serious-minded pastors desires to have a Christ-centered ministry. But what precisely does it mean to have a ministry where Christ is the central theme of our preaching and controlling paradigm of our shepherding? This is the question Dr Tom Ascol attempts to address as he discusses how Jesus Christ should shape the pastor’s ministry. Read more
Shepherding the Flock of God
The Scriptures liken the people of God to a flock of sheep and her leaders to shepherds (Pss 78:52; 79:13; Jer 3:15; Ezek 34:1-10; John 10:1-10). The New Testament refers describes the role of the church’s overseers and elders as that of a pastor (Eph 4:11; 1 Pet 5:2). Understanding the pastor-sheep metaphor and its application to the church’s leaders and her members is vital for the church’s health. In the lecture below, Pastor Bob Selph focuses on the task of caring for Christ’s sheep in the capacity of a pastor. Read more
The Pastor as a Theologian – Tom Ascol
A seminary professor and a pastor were walking through a cemetery, and as they came upon a grave, the professor said, “Look, there are two men buried in this grave.” When the pastor asked, “How do you know that?” The professor replied, “Because the tombstone reads, ‘Here lies a pastor and a theologian.’” Unfortunately, this dichotomizing mentality pervades the modern evangelical church. However, in the lecture below, Pastor Tom Ascol seeks to correct this thinking and argues for the pastor-theologian model. Read more

Is modern technology a help or a hindrance to ministry? Dr Mark Ward Jr attempts to answer that question in a two-part video series entitled “Technology Giveth & Technology Taketh Away,” which I’ve posted below. In part one, he focuses on how technology can aid our Bible study, sermon preparation, scheduling, etc. Then, in part two, Dr Ward highlights several ways in which the use of technology can distract us and negatively impact our ministry. Sample a Video Lecture from RBS’s Recent “Pastoral Theology” Module
Reformed Baptist Seminary recently offered a live module on the subject of “Pastoral Theology.” We invited four pastors to lecture on various topics related to pastoral ministry. We also asked Dr Mark Ward Jr, an editor for a Christian publisher, to give two lectures on technology and the pastoral ministry. Lord willing, we hope to have all the lectures edited, uploaded, and available to the public within the next few weeks. RBS wants to make the entire course accessible to churches for free as a gift and an expression of our appreciation for those who have prayed for and/or supported the seminary ministry financially. Below I’ve posted the first lecture by Pastor Bob Selph on the “pastoral office” for you to sample. Read more
